Aortic Stenosis and TAVI/TAVR Assessment
Aortic stenosis occurs when the aortic valve becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow from the heart.
When severe aortic stenosis requires valve replacement, possible treatments include surgical aortic valve replacement or TAVI/TAVR. TAVI replaces the diseased valve through a catheter rather than conventional open-heart surgery.
Choosing between TAVI and surgery may depend on:
- Symptoms and echocardiogram findings
- Heart function
- Valve and blood-vessel anatomy
- CT and coronary assessment
- Age, frailty and general health
- Previous heart procedures
- The expected benefits and risks of each approach
TAVI is not automatically preferable because it is less invasive. Surgery may be more appropriate for some patients, while others may not yet need an intervention.
